Mycoplasma Detection and Decontamination

Apr 14, 2023

Mycoplasma is a widespread contaminant of cell culture and have profound effects on host cell biology by depriving cells of nutrients and inducing global changes in gene expression. As mycoplasma is typical sub-micron in size and lacking a cell wall, it is difficult to detect by microscopy and it is resistant to many antibiotic treatments. Although mycoplasma contamination does not usually cause cell death, it can cause a variety of effects on cultured cells, including altered metabolism, slowed growth rates and chromosomal aberrations. Unfortunately, these changes may not be immediately noticeable but can ultimately affect the reliability of the culture data.

The conventional methods provide effective Mycoplasma detection. However, they are time-consuming, minimum of 28 days to perform. NAT-based assay, adopting Nucleic acid Amplification Technique, also known as PCR-based mycoplasma detection, is a trusted method. It amplifies the bacterial DNA if it is presented in culture samples. We designed PCR primers carefully to eliminate false positives and ensure that valuable cultures are not destroyed if they are not contaminated.

Our highly sensitive mycoplasma detection service render the result in several days on receipt of cell culture samples. If contamination exists Mycoplasma decontamination service can be performed on your request.

Check whether mycoplasma contamination occurs when ? you receive a new cell line from other laboratories. ? your cell has been passaged more than 10 generations. ? your cell is not growing actively as supposed to be. ? your cell is continuously growing for more than two months. ? you are preparing a cell bank. ? cell growth condition is in doubt.

You can send us your request for mycoplasma detection service to enquiry@tme-scientific.com for more details.
