A new ISO standard for non-sewered sanitation systems aims to provide safety and performance requirements relating to usability, maintainability, and reliability for sanitation systems not attached to sewers. The systems will help stop the spread of disease by being free of bacteria, viruses, fungi, worms and other pathogens, protecting individuals, communities, and their resources. Toilets conforming to this standard will be reliable, safe, and hygienic.
This standard will also help manufacturers of non-sewered sanitation systems as requirements and resources for building a system will be predetermined. ISO 30500 represents best practices while reflecting the consensus of regulators, manufacturers and users.
