A new ASTM International standard is set to measure how well wall-mounted kitchen range hoods can capture indoor air pollutants, as cooking has been determined to be a major source of indoor air pollution. The new standard is aimed at helping organizations that rate range hoods and the consumers who buy them.
Indoor air pollutants from cooking include water vapor, odor, and other health-related contaminants. Though building codes and ventilation standards address air flow requirements of range hoods, there is a wide variance in the hoods ability to remove pollutants. The new standard will be able to help consumers choose range hoods based on how their ability to capture pollutants and exhaust them outside.
