An ASTM subcommiittee on furniture safety reviewed and updated an existing standard in an effort to enhance dresser safety and prevent tipover accidents. The revision resulted in updating the consumer warning label with a new hazard symbol showing a child climbing a set of dresser drawers. Additionally, the label shows a circle with either a black or red line through it that appears over the symbol.
The warning label was not the only change to the standard, the standard was also changed to address the permanence of the label. A label is considered permanent if it is still legible and attached after an ASTM International adhesion test (D3359), or if it is paper and it cannot be removed without damaging the surface of the product, or tearing into pieces.
