Laboratory Test Request

Zinc Gear Cases Paint Chipping Failure Analysis

Project Description

Contract Laboratory needed for failure analysis for identification of the root cause of the failure of Zinc Gear cases chipping on paint in the nose area.
Visual inspection/documentation of the chipping condition
Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the debonded surface to detect any evidence of contaminates.
Cross sectional analysis of the coating between the chipped location versus a good location to identify any variations in the paint thickness, the substrate surface profile, or presence of contaminates/debonding at the coating/substrate interface.
Differential Scanning Calorimetry of the chipping paint versus good paint to identify any variation in the thermal properties (which can indicate the level of powder coat curing).
analysis of the casting to see porosity or any contaminant trapped in the base material
