For a drug substance, stability testing determines the "retest" period, the time frame during which the drug substance is expected to remain within its specification and therefore can be used in the manufacturing of a given drug product. This is performed after the established retest period has elapsed, a drug substance can be used if it meets the specifications. For drug products, stability testing determine the shelf life of the products by establishing the duration for which product is safe to use and retain therapeutic value according to the level of active ingredient(s).
