2023-06-26 WARRENDALE, PA The expanding market for electric vehicle technology has been particularly active for transportation and other high-use vehicles, where charging system standardization is necessary to ensure consistent power delivery.
SAE?s J3105 Recommended Practice: Electric Vehicle Power Transfer System Using Conductive Automated Connection Devices, along with related supplements, have been updated and released. These documents address the safe implementation of mechanized conductive power transfer systems that can be used on-route for recharging buses and heavy-duty vehicles.
On-route conductive systems are attractive in charging applications where down-time needs to be minimized and the operator can remain in the driver?s seat while charging occurs. The updates to the J3105 suite of documents help promote the safe testing and performance requirements of these systems.
The main J3015 document has been updated to accommodate sequential charging of multiple vehicles, and adds RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to allow for charging of appropriate vehicles. The J3105-1, 2, and 3 supplements are updated to allow for new equipment, connections and mechanical alignment.
These updated recommended practices help ensure that charging connections are safe and interoperable among different manufacturers, and that vehicles independent of the manufacturer will be able to use the system.
The original J3105 document was released in 2020 by SAE?s Hybrid-EV Committee. The document sponsor is Mark Kosowski of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
