SAE International® Revises Standard for Plug-In Vehicle and Off-Board Direct Current Charger Communication

09/14/2023

Update Identifies Interoperable Vehicle-to-Grid/Home/Etc. Bi-Directional Charging Communication Requirements

WARRENDALE, Pa. (Sept. 13, 2023) ? The SAE International® Hybrid Communication and Interoperability Task Force has completed an extensive revision of the SAE Standard; J2847/2: Communication Between Plug-in Vehicles and Off-Board DC Chargers.

This update is the first step to offer a standard, interoperable solution for vehicle and charging station suppliers to utilize the same communication code for Direct Current (DC) Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) including Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) for vehicles to receive, as well as distribute, electricity.

The update also identifies home requirements that should be considered, including:

Main Home Utility Panel ? including the addition of an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), the same as a home generator would require

Home Balancing Transformer - since the home is no longer connected to the utility transformer to balance the 120VAC phase circuits

Alternating Current (AC) vs DC Inverter Considerations

Additional Recommended Practices such as J2847/3 includes this for AC V2G and V2H.

J2847/5 includes the requirements for AC V2L and V2V. These are both in the final stages of being published. This series of standards and recommended practices addresses common solutions for customers to select vehicles and equipment to use on additional interoperable solutions including:

AC V2L ? Example: remote sites with no power grid to power tools, equipment, camp sites

AC V2V ? Example: Allowing an EV to ?Jump Start? another EV that may need a small amount of energy to drive to the nearest charging station

Like all SAE Standards, this standard will continue to be updated as regulations and customer expectations continue to evolve for these new uses of Electric Vehicles.
