Testing of investigational Zika vaccine in humans begins

The first of five clinical trials to test the safety of a potential Zika virus vaccine, called ZPIV, begun at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Clinical Trial Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. The vaccine is based off off of another vaccine for a similar virus called Japanese encephalitis. The study is expected to be complete in the fall of 2018. Zika is now prevalent in 73 countries and has affected more than 4,000 people in the U.S.
