A new federal standard approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) aimed at making sling carriers safer is now in effect.
The new standard requires warning labels be permanently attached and have instructions, such as illustrated diagrams, that show correct child positioning in the sling. Warning labels must also include statements regarding suffocation hazards as well as preventative steps, hazards regarding possibility of child to fall out of sling, and a reminder to caregivers/wearers to check for broken snaps, buckles, rings, or other hardware.
The new standard also requires the carrier to hold at least three times the manufacturer's recommended weight limit, keep the child from calling out during normal use, and be more durable by avoiding seams from separating, fabric from tearing, and components from breaking.
The standard was approved in an effort to prevent deaths and reduce injuries to young children. The new standard applies to all infant slings and/or carriers manufactured or imported after January 30th 2018.
