Construction laboratory needed for weld failure analysis and root cause analysis of seam failures of Air Supported Structure buildings that are produced using Radio Frequency welding.
A brief background of the situation is this: We use architectural coated fabric for the exterior of the building, typically 30 mil thick, or 28 oz per square yard. The building is designed with a thermal liner of laminated PVC to create a dead-air space between layers for insulation. The thermal liner is 15 oz per square yard. Often a third layer is used to create two dead-air spaces similar to a triple pane window. All layers are welded simultaneously, so in the case of Triple Wall construction there are 6 layers of material being RF welded.
The failures we have experienced occur between the two exterior fabrics, usually during the hottest weather conditions. The weld will open up and appears that the two exterior layers were never fully welded. However, destructive shop tests show that the welds were fully welded.
