Description: Animal models and toxicology studies have had high impact on compound success, in guiding the selection of leads for further development. However, there is uncertainty about the extrapolation of findings from preclinical studies to the effect in humans. Biomarkers have become an invaluable component of preclinical assessments. The value of biomarkers, including imaging markers, needs to be weighed carefully. Although they promise to shed light on disease progression and modification, the financial investment makes them a costly undertaking. How will they pay off? We will look at the emerging technologies for identifying and validating those markers, with an emphasis on biomarkers that have translated from preclinical studies for clinical decision making..
